It's a game that really stuck with me after I played it, in a way that the first game didn't. The game isn't afraid to take it too far - and if you're aware of the cut audio clips, it could've gone farther. It's more frightening and disturbing than the fun aspect that comes with playing Outlast 1. There's a tension to Outlast 2 that 1 does not have. The flashbacks to the school are truly some of the scariest moments I've had in gaming. The visuals were just gruesome and horrific at times. For me, a lot of the scarier moments of the game were the quiet moments when you are walking to the next destination. Instead of a straightforward story about experiments gone wrong in an insane asylum, Outlast 2 was a deep story about religion and guilt. In contrast to the haunted house style of Outlast 1, 2 went into a more environmental horror style. I don't think anyone was prepared for how this game was going to go. Outlast 2 is a game I believe people will be praising in 10 years. I don't think that's bad for the type of game it is, but it certainly wasn't much different when compared to Outlast 2. The only times it gets really plot heavy are the very beginning, middle, and end. Really, the first game consists of mostly aimlessly trying to escape, going from one Chris Walker section to the next, with some variety here and there. It was never going to be super plot heavy. For the type of game Outlast 2 is (and the first one as well really), the type of story they made was to be expected. Symbolism can help to enrich an experience. I suppose I like the story of Outlast 2 more because it isn't as straightforward, and there is stuff to read between the lines. I don't think they had a limited timeframe at all though. I'm not saying it's bad, I'm just saying you could make those same claims if you really wanted to, and they would be fairly justified.

She began hallucinating about killing the children again and took the hallucinations as a message from the antichrist.īlake experiences something somewhat similar in that reliving the trama via hallucination causes him to revert to a childlike state of mind (Towards the end of the game, he mixes up Lynn and Jessica, he also talks about "finding a grownup".) Her trauma over being forced to kill all of her adoptive children caused the tower flashes to begin affecting her negatively and basically drove her insane. Multiple other cultists note experiencing vivid hallucinations that they also believe are messages from God. Papa Knoth believes the tower flash hallucinations are actually messages from God. This is why he doesn't die IRL while hallucinating, because everyone else is hallucinating too. (again, like the Engine except in an AOE)Īt the start of the game, Blake sees the aftermath of a tower flash when all the cultists chasing him suddenly stop and appear to be hallucinating traumatic events in their lives.Īfterwards he notes hearing music in his skull.Įvery time Blake hallucinates the school, the tower has flashed. One of the main affects of the towers is to cause dreamlike hallucinations whenever the tower flashes and psychoactive pregnancies in some women, which is what happened to Lynn. The cult is affected by Murkoff's radio towers that use similar technology to the Engine. It's not the game's fault you didn't pay attention.

Except it is? It directly ties in with what's happening at Temple Gate.
